Ministry reviews draft National Power Development Plan VIII

The contents include a review of projects involving coal, gas, and solar energy. Resolution 55-NQ/TW on strategic orientations for Vietnam's national energy development to 2030, with a vision to 2045, also includes electricity-related goals.
A mechanism for transitional wind and solar power projects is also up for review, as is a decision regarding the piloting of a mechanism for direct electricity purchase and sale between renewable energy generators and large electricity users.

Notably, the ministry has proposed that the total capacity of power plants by 2030 will be between 120,995 and 148,358 megawatts (MW) (excluding rooftop solar power and co-generation sources).
Hydropower is expected to account for 19.5-22.1% of the total, coal-fueled energy for 25.3-31%, and gas-fired energy for 24.7-26.1%. The percentages of renewable energy and imported electricity are between 17.9 and 23.9% and 3.3% to 3.4%, respectively. The draft was posted on the web portals of the Government and the Ministry on May 9 of this year to solicit feedback on its contents.
